Podcast 1 — Introduction & meaning
Habit is one of the most powerful forces shaping human behaviour. When something becomes a habit — when we have been doing it long enough that it feels natural, expected, and comfortable — we say we are accustomed to it.
Accustomed means used to something through habit — pronounced uh-KUS-tumd, with stress on the second syllable. It derives from Old French acostumer — to make usual, to habituate. The root is costume in the older sense of custom — a habitual practice. To be accustomed to something is to have made it your custom: to have repeated it enough that it has become a default expectation.
The word entered English in the fifteenth century and has retained a formal, literary feel ever since. It appears most naturally in written language and formal speech. You would say she was accustomed to working long hours — not she was used to working long hours, though both mean the same thing. Accustomed carries a note of established habit and dignified endurance.
Accustomed is almost always used in the pattern be accustomed to, followed by a noun or a gerund — the verb in its -ing form. She was accustomed to the cold. He was not accustomed to being questioned. The construction be accustomed to mirrors be used to and be in the habit of, but with a more elevated register. Get accustomed to is the dynamic version — the process of becoming habituated — while be accustomed to describes the established state.
The adjective also appears in a slightly different pattern: in his accustomed manner, with his accustomed thoroughness. Here it means characteristic, habitual, typical — it describes a trait so established that it has become a defining feature of the person.
Accustomed sits firmly in formal and literary registers — law, journalism, literary fiction, and professional writing. In casual conversation, used to is the natural equivalent.
What we are accustomed to, we no longer notice — and that invisibility is both its comfort and its danger.

Podcast 2 — In conversation
Speaker A: I have been reading some Victorian fiction and accustomed comes up constantly — accustomed to poverty, accustomed to hardship, accustomed to his ways. It feels slightly archaic now. Is it still appropriate to use in modern writing?
Speaker B: It is still in active use in formal and professional writing — legal documents, business correspondence, journalism, and literary prose. The archaic feeling you get from Victorian fiction is a register effect rather than true obsolescence. Accustomed is formal; used to is casual. Both are grammatically correct and in current use, but they signal different registers. In a legal brief or a formal essay, accustomed is entirely appropriate. In a text message, it would feel odd.
Speaker A: What about get accustomed to versus be accustomed to? I was accustomed to it versus I got accustomed to it.
Speaker B: Be accustomed to describes a settled state — the habit is already established. I was accustomed to the long commute — it no longer bothered me. Get accustomed to describes the process of habituation — the transition from unfamiliar to familiar. I had to get accustomed to working from home. The distinction is the same as be used to versus get used to — state versus process.
Speaker A: And in his accustomed manner — that feels quite different from the other uses.
Speaker B: Right — that is accustomed as a pre-noun modifier meaning characteristic or typical. He responded with his accustomed calm. She arrived at her accustomed hour. Here accustomed does not describe a personal habit so much as a recognised, predictable pattern that has become identified with the person. It is more literary and slightly more elevated even than the standard be accustomed to construction.
Speaker A: A close synonym would be habitual?
Speaker B: Habitual is close but has a slightly negative connotation in some uses — a habitual offender, a habitual latecomer. Accustomed is more neutral to positive. Used to is the direct casual synonym. Familiar with is close when applied to knowledge rather than practice. Each has a slightly different shade.
Podcast 3 — Prompt engineering
Speaker B: Accustomed is a user-behaviour word in prompt engineering — it describes what a user already knows, expects, and treats as normal. Used precisely in prompts, it drives personalisation engines, onboarding UX, default state logic, and adaptive interface design. It tells the AI to build around existing habits rather than imposing new ones. Let me show you how.
Speaker A: I would usually say familiar with or used to in a prompt. Does accustomed to give different output?
Speaker B: Accustomed to implies an established, persistent habit — it drives default states, preference persistence, and adaptive behaviour more strongly than familiar with, which is more about knowledge. First — an onboarding UI:
Speaker B: PROMPT:
Speaker B: Accustomed to usage history driving feature prominence — the word produces an adaptive onboarding system based on past habits, not a generic welcome screen.
Speaker A: Features hidden behind a discover more section if the user was not accustomed to them — that is a real change management UX pattern for software migrations.
Speaker B: Exactly. Now user preferences:
Speaker B: PROMPT:
Speaker A: Automatically restore the accustomed layout after a redesign — that is a real user retention feature for enterprise software updates. The word drives the preference restoration logic.
Speaker B: Database schema:
Speaker B: PROMPT:
Speaker A: Confidence score per setting that increases with repeated use and promotes to system default — that is a real adaptive personalisation algorithm expressed in a database schema.
Speaker B: Now a full application:
Speaker B: PROMPT:
Speaker A: A help overlay mapping digital elements to their paper equivalents for the first three uses — that is a genuine change management feature for teams accustomed to manual processes.
Speaker B: Last one — a settings UI:
Speaker B: PROMPT:
Speaker A: Reset to VS Code defaults per category — that is a real competitive onboarding feature for any editor targeting developers accustomed to VS Code's interface.
Speaker B: Use accustomed in prompts whenever you are designing for users who already have habits, preferences, or workflows. It consistently produces empathetic, habit-aware architectures that reduce friction and increase adoption.
