Podcast 1 — Introduction & meaning
Today's word is Duty — noun, pronounced DYOO-tee, in IPA /ˈdjuːti/.
Duty is an obligation — a moral, legal, or professional responsibility to do something. It is your duty to report the error. She carried out her duty with quiet dedication. The doctor has a duty of care to her patients. Duty also means a tax levied on imported goods — customs duty, import duty, stamp duty. As an adjective compound: on duty means actively working and responsible, off duty means not working and not responsible.
The word comes from Anglo-French duete — what is owed — from Old French deu, past participle of devoir, to owe. The same Latin debere — to owe — root that gives English due, debt, and debit. Duty thus means literally what is owed — the obligation that must be discharged. It entered English in the fourteenth century and quickly became established in both the moral and the fiscal senses.
The philosophical concept of duty has been central to ethics since Aristotle, but its most systematic treatment came from the eighteenth-century German philosopher Immanuel Kant. For Kant, duty was not merely an obligation imposed from outside but the rational recognition that moral law requires certain actions regardless of their consequences. The categorical imperative — act only according to a principle you could will to be universal law — made duty the foundation of morality itself. Kantian ethics is sometimes called deontological ethics from the Greek deon, meaning duty or obligation.
In law, duty of care is the legal obligation to exercise reasonable care to avoid causing foreseeable harm to others. A doctor has a duty of care to patients, an employer to employees, a road user to other road users. Breach of the duty of care is the basis of many negligence claims.
Duty in the fiscal sense — customs duty, stamp duty, excise duty — refers to taxes that are levied on specific transactions, goods, or activities. These are among the oldest forms of taxation, with import duties recorded in ancient Rome and Egypt.
In register, duty is formal in legal and military contexts, and widely used across all registers for the everyday sense of obligation.
Remember: duty is what you owe — not to anyone in particular, but to the standard you have committed to uphold.

Podcast 2 — In conversation
Speaker A: The word duty carries such different weight in different contexts — a soldier's duty, a doctor's duty of care, customs duty. The sense of obligation is common but the character of the obligation differs enormously.
Speaker B: The obligation structure is what unifies them all, but the source and nature of the obligation differs. A soldier's duty is imposed by military hierarchy and the commitment made on enlistment — it carries potentially mortal weight. A doctor's duty of care is imposed by professional ethics, common law, and the relationship between doctor and patient — it is enforceable and its breach has legal consequences. Customs duty is imposed by the state as a fiscal measure — it is an obligation to pay rather than an obligation to act. What they share is the idea that in each context, there are things you must do not because you particularly want to but because your role, your commitment, or the law requires it of you.
Speaker A: The Kantian conception of duty — the categorical imperative — is philosophically influential but also in tension with our everyday use of the word, which is more pragmatic.
Speaker B: Kant's categorical imperative is deliberately demanding. Everyday duty is usually contextual — your duty as a parent, your duty as an employee, your duty as a citizen — and these duties can conflict. Kant's duty is absolute: if something is a genuine moral duty, it must be done regardless of consequences, regardless of competing duties, regardless of personal cost. The tension between Kantian absolute duty and the everyday contextual duty that admits trade-offs is real. Most of us operate with something closer to Ross's prima facie duties — obligations that are real and binding unless overridden by stronger obligations — rather than Kant's absolute imperatives. Duty in practice involves moral arithmetic that Kant's theory resists.
Speaker A: Close synonyms — obligation, responsibility, commitment, charge, onus. How does duty compare?
Speaker B: Obligation is the most formal and legal — you are legally obligated. Responsibility is broader — it includes things you are accountable for, not just things you must do. Commitment implies a voluntary undertaking — you have committed yourself. Charge implies being entrusted with something — he was in charge of the matter. Onus implies a burden placed on someone — the onus is on you to prove it. Duty is the most morally weighted of these words — it implies not just an obligation but a sense of rightness about fulfilling it. Duty calls has a moral urgency that obligation calls doesn't quite capture.
Speaker A: Common mistake — using duty when you mean role or function. My duty is to process the forms can sound overly formal when my job is to process the forms would be more natural. Duty implies moral weight that not every task carries.
Speaker B: The moral register of duty is important to calibrate. Describing administrative tasks as duties can sound either admirably conscientious or pompous depending on context. Reserving duty for situations with genuine moral weight — professional ethics, public service, personal commitments — preserves its gravity. When every task is a duty, the word loses its power to distinguish the morally significant from the merely routine.
Podcast 3 — Prompt engineering
Speaker B: Duty is a precise word in AI prompts for compliance systems, scheduling tools, professional ethics analysers, and customs management platforms.
Speaker A: Scheduling tools especially — on-duty and off-duty management, duty rosters, and duty rotation are foundational HR and operations management problems with well-defined algorithmic solutions.
Speaker B: First prompt.
Write a Python duty roster manager for a 24-hour emergency services team. Generate weekly rosters that: ensure each position has a qualified officer on duty at all times, distribute night duties and weekend duties equitably across all eligible officers over a 12-week planning cycle, respect minimum rest periods — at least 11 consecutive hours off between duty periods, and individual duty hour limits — no officer exceeds 48 hours per week averaged over a 17-week reference period, honour pre-approved leave requests, and minimise the number of officers on call as cover. Generate a fairness report showing duty burden by officer at the end of each planning cycle.
Speaker B: Fairness report showing duty burden by officer at the end of each cycle — the duty roster manager applies the equity audit that prevents the same individuals consistently absorbing the most antisocial duties.
Speaker A: What about a professional ethics tool?
Build a TypeScript professional duty-of-care checker for healthcare practitioners. For a described clinical scenario: identify the duty-of-care relationships present — clinician to patient, clinician to third parties who may be endangered, and institution to patient, assess whether each duty has been fulfilled by checking: was the standard of care appropriate to the patient's condition, were foreseeable risks identified and addressed, was consent obtained where required, and was appropriate documentation made, flag any apparent duty-of-care breach with the specific standard not met, and generate a clinical governance report for the case.
Speaker B: Duty to third parties who may be endangered — the professional ethics checker applies the Tarasoff duty-to-warn principle that a clinician's duty of care can extend beyond the patient to identifiable others at risk.
Speaker A: What about a customs management tool?
Write a Node.js import duty calculator and classifier for an international e-commerce platform. For each shipment: classify the goods using the Harmonised System commodity code, retrieve the applicable customs duty rate for the destination country and commodity code from a duty rate database, calculate the ad valorem duty on the customs value — cost plus insurance plus freight, check for applicable preferential duty rates under free trade agreements between the origin and destination countries, and generate a landed cost estimate combining the duty, VAT or GST, and brokerage fees. Flag shipments above de minimis thresholds that require formal customs entry.
Speaker B: Preferential duty rates under free trade agreements — the import duty calculator applies the trade agreement database check that can reduce duty to zero for qualifying goods from FTA partner countries.
Speaker A: What about a corporate governance tool?
Write a Python board director fiduciary duty tracker that monitors director compliance with their legal duties. Track for each director: duty to act in good faith in the company's best interests — conflicted votes, duty to act within their powers — resolutions outside the articles of association, duty to avoid conflicts of interest — undeclared interests and self-dealing transactions, duty to exercise reasonable care and diligence — attendance at board meetings and committee meetings, and duty to promote the success of the company — consistency of decisions with the approved strategy. Generate a quarterly fiduciary duty compliance report for the board chair and company secretary.
Speaker B: Undeclared interests and self-dealing transactions as conflicts of interest signals — the fiduciary duty tracker applies the specific legal duty that is most commonly the basis for director liability claims.
Speaker A: One more — for an AI ethics tool?
Write a TypeScript AI duty-of-care framework that defines and enforces the duties that AI systems owe to the users they interact with. Define the core AI duties: duty of accuracy — do not generate false information presented as fact, duty of transparency — disclose AI nature and limitations when relevant, duty of non-manipulation — do not use persuasion techniques that bypass rational deliberation, duty of privacy — do not elicit or retain unnecessary personal information, and duty of escalation — recognise situations requiring human expertise and direct users appropriately. For each interaction, log duty compliance and generate a duty audit report identifying any potential duty breach.
Speaker B: Duty of escalation — recognise situations requiring human expertise — the AI duty-of-care framework applies the professional ethics principle that a practitioner's duty includes knowing the limits of their competence and referring beyond those limits.
Speaker A: Duty in prompts activates the owed-obligation, must-be-discharged, morally-weighted-responsibility frame — it produces outputs that treat defined obligations as systematic, auditable, and ethically binding constraints on behaviour.
Speaker B: And whether it's a roster, a clinical interaction, a customs declaration, a board meeting, or an AI conversation, duty always marks the same essential claim: there are things you owe — and how you discharge them is a measure of the kind of professional, institution, or system you are.
Speaker B: Prompt example:
