Narrator: Listless. A word that feels exactly like what it means — slow, quiet, drained of all drive.

Narrator: The word listless — IPA ˈlɪst.ləs — is an adjective. It describes a state of having no energy, no enthusiasm, and no real desire to do anything. A listless person moves slowly, responds without interest, and seems to be going through the motions. The word carries a sense of a quiet inner emptiness — not sadness exactly, but an absence of spark.

Narrator: The etymology is surprisingly poetic. Listless is built from the old Middle English word list — which meant desire, pleasure, or will. This is not the list you write shopping items on. This is an archaic verb meaning to wish, to want, to long for. Add the suffix -less — meaning without — and you get listless: without desire. Without will. The root list in this sense has completely vanished from modern English. Listless is its only surviving trace.

Narrator: Over the centuries, listless settled comfortably into literary English. Victorian novelists loved it as a descriptor for characters in the grip of melancholy, exhaustion, or grief — heroines lying listlessly on settees, soldiers returning from battle in a listless daze. The word evokes something atmospheric. It is not merely tired. It is the tiredness that has given up the effort of being tired.

Narrator: In modern usage, listless appears in writing more than in speech. In everyday conversation, people are more likely to say drained, flat, or just not feeling it. But listless earns its place when you want precision. A listless performance, a listless economy, a listless team — in each case the word says more than tired or slow. It signals a loss of animating force.
