Podcast 1 — Introduction & meaning

Narrator: Stack. One syllable. STACK. A word that is layered into the foundations of everything developers build, from a haystack in a medieval field to a microservices architecture running in the cloud.

Narrator: In its oldest sense, a stack is simply an ordered pile — things placed one on top of another. A stack of books on a desk. A stack of invoices on a tray. A stack of pancakes cooling on a plate. The items follow an order determined by when they were placed: the last thing you put on comes off first. This ordering principle is not just a physical convenience — it is a fundamental idea in computer science.

Narrator: In computing, a stack is one of the most important data structures ever formalised. It operates on the principle of Last In, First Out — LIFO. You push an item onto the top of the stack, and you pop the top item off when you need it. The item that went on most recently is the one you retrieve first. This structure underpins function call management in every programming language — when a function calls another function, the return address is pushed onto the call stack. When the inner function finishes, it pops off and the outer function resumes.

Narrator: The technology stack — or tech stack — is a related but distinct meaning. Your tech stack is the combination of technologies you have chosen to build an application: perhaps React on the front end, Node and Express on the back end, PostgreSQL for the database, and Docker for deployment. Describing your stack tells another developer almost everything they need to know about how your project is built and what skills it requires. A full-stack developer works across the whole column — front end, back end, and the layers in between.

Narrator: The word came into English from Old Norse stakkr, meaning a haystack — a large seasonal pile of stored hay. By the fourteenth century it was in common English use for agricultural piles. By the seventeenth century it described industrial chimneys and smokestacks. In the twentieth century, computer scientists formalised the data structure, and the tech stack usage followed naturally in the software industry.

Narrator: Stack. A pile with memory. A structure with rules. One of the words that built the modern web.

Speaker A: I keep hearing full-stack in job advertisements but the requirements always seem different. Is there actually a fixed definition?

Speaker B: There is a shared meaning but no fixed content. Full-stack always means a developer who can work on both the front end — what the user sees in the browser — and the back end — the server, the database, the business logic. What varies is the specific technologies involved. One company might mean React and Node. Another might mean Vue and Python. The stack part tells you there are layers, and full tells you the developer covers all of them. So the concept is consistent even when the technologies differ wildly from role to role.

Speaker A: What exactly is a call stack? I understand it in theory but I find it hard to picture.

Speaker B: Think of it as a stack of plates in a canteen, except each plate represents a function in your programme. When your programme runs and calls a function, that function is placed on top of the stack. If that function calls another function, the second one goes on top. The programme always works on the top plate — the most recently placed function. When the top function finishes, it is removed and the programme returns to whatever was underneath. This is why when you see a stack trace in an error message, it shows you the chain of function calls from the most recent back down to the original call — you are literally reading the stack from top to bottom.

Speaker A: Is a stack overflow literally related to the stack data structure, or did Stack Overflow just borrow the name?

Speaker B: It is directly related. A stack overflow is a real error that occurs when the call stack exceeds its allocated memory — typically because a function calls itself recursively without ever hitting a base case, so functions keep piling onto the stack indefinitely until it runs out of space. The error is called a stack overflow because the stack has overflowed its capacity. The website Stack Overflow borrowed the name deliberately because it is one of the most recognisable errors programmers encounter, and the founders wanted a name that was instantly familiar to developers. So yes — the website is named after the data structure error.

Speaker A: When someone says they are moving to a different tech stack, what does that actually involve?

Speaker B: It means changing one or more of the core technologies that make up the application — which could mean switching the front-end framework, the back-end language, the database, or the deployment infrastructure, or all of these at once. Moving stacks is a significant decision. It often requires retraining the team, rewriting substantial parts of the codebase, and re-evaluating all the dependencies and integrations. Companies sometimes describe it as a migration or a re-platform. The reason stack is such a useful word here is that it conveys the interconnected nature of these technologies — changing one layer can affect everything above and below it.

Speaker B: Today we are prompting with stack. In development, stack is one of the most versatile prompt words — it covers the data structure, the call stack, the tech stack, and the idea of layered components. Six prompts built on that range.

Speaker A: Stack covering data structures, architecture, and full-stack apps — that is a broad but coherent set of use cases.

Speaker B: Prompt one — data structure demo. Build a visual stack demo in the browser. Push and pop buttons. Show the current stack as a column of labelled boxes. Highlight the top item. Display Last In First Out label. Clean minimal UI.

Speaker A: A visual LIFO stack with push, pop, and top highlighting — that is the perfect teaching tool for anyone learning data structures for the first time.

Speaker B: Prompt two — tech stack card. Build a tech stack card component for a developer portfolio. Show front-end, back-end, database, and DevOps layers. Each layer has an icon placeholder, technology name, and version. Dark glassmorphism style.

Speaker A: A layered tech stack card — front end, back end, database, DevOps. The visual metaphor of the card matches the concept perfectly.

Speaker B: Prompt three — call stack visualiser. Build a call stack visualiser that lets users write a recursive function and watch the call stack grow and shrink step by step. Show each frame as a card with function name and current arguments. Pause and step controls.

Speaker A: A step-by-step call stack visualiser with function frames and pause controls — that would make recursion and call stacks click for any junior developer immediately.

Speaker B: Prompt four — HR app full stack. Build a full-stack HR employee directory. React front end, Node Express back end, SQLite database. List employees, add new employee form, search by name. REST API. Run locally with one command.

Speaker A: A full-stack HR directory — React, Node, SQLite, REST API — in one prompt. That is a complete runnable application with a defined stack.

Speaker B: Prompt five — stack overflow handler. Build a Node utility that wraps recursive functions and catches stack overflow errors gracefully. Show a clear error message with the recursion depth reached. Include a test case with infinite recursion.

Speaker A: A stack overflow catcher with depth tracking and a clear error message — that is a practical safety utility for any recursive algorithm work.

Speaker B: Prompt six — full SaaS app. Build a full-stack SaaS project management app. Stack: React, Express, PostgreSQL. Features: projects, tasks, assignees, status tracking, and a dashboard with summary charts. JWT authentication. Seed data included.

Speaker A: A full SaaS stack — React, Express, PostgreSQL, JWT, dashboard with charts, seed data — that is a complete application architecture in one sentence.

Speaker B: Stack in six prompts. From a visual data structure demo to a full SaaS application — the word gives you the whole column, from the first layer to the last.
