Podcast 1 — Introduction & meaning

Welcome. Today's word is vision — a noun, pronounced VIZ-hun, with the stress on the first syllable, written in phonetics as v, ɪ, ʒ, ə, n.

Vision has several distinct but related meanings in English. At its most literal, it refers to the faculty of sight — the physical ability to see. Good vision, impaired vision, night vision. This is the optical-biological sense.

But vision has developed a rich figurative dimension that is equally important in contemporary usage. A vision in the second sense is a mental image or imaginative conception — something seen in the mind rather than with the eyes. A visionary plan, a clear vision of the future, a strategic vision for the company. Here, vision implies not just imagining but imagining clearly, boldly, and with purpose.

The word comes from Latin visio, meaning seeing or sight, from videre, to see. It entered Middle English through Old French in the thirteenth century. The figurative senses developed from the earliest stages of the word's English history — from biblical and religious visions — prophetic or divine appearances seen by a chosen person — to the modern business and political sense of a compelling picture of a desired future.

The religious and prophetic use of vision is ancient and cross-cultural: prophets and mystics in many traditions have described receiving visions — vivid, meaningful perceptions of things not physically present. This sense gave English the visionary as a noun — one who sees beyond the present. The word gradually transferred its meaning from supernatural sight to exceptional foresight.

In register, vision is standard to elevated — used in medical, scientific, business, political, and literary contexts across a very wide range of registers.

Remember it like this: vision is what connects the eye to the future — what you see, and what you imagine seeing.

And that is our word — vision: sight, imagination, and the courage to see what is not yet there.

Podcast 2 — In conversation

Speaker A: In business and organisational contexts, vision has a specific and important role. A company's vision statement — distinct from its mission statement — describes the desired future state the organisation is working toward. The mission describes what the organisation does now; the vision describes where it is trying to go. A powerful vision statement gives direction, inspires commitment, and helps people understand why their day-to-day work matters in a larger context. It is meant to be aspirational and long-term rather than immediately actionable.

Speaker B: The medical and clinical sense of vision covers a vast and important field. Visual acuity — the sharpness of vision — is measured on the Snellen chart that most people have encountered at an optician's. Colour vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and contrast sensitivity are all dimensions of visual capability measured and managed by ophthalmologists and optometrists. Conditions affecting vision range from the very common — myopia and hyperopia — to the serious — glaucoma, macular degeneration, and retinal detachment. Vision health is one of the most important dimensions of quality of life.

Speaker A: Vision versus eyesight — what is the distinction?

Speaker B: Eyesight is a more colloquial and specifically physical term for the faculty of seeing — your eyesight is your ability to see with your eyes. Vision is broader and more versatile: it encompasses the physical ability to see but extends naturally into the figurative dimensions of mental imagery, imagination, and strategic foresight. You would say his eyesight is failing — referring specifically to the physical faculty — and his vision for the company is inspiring — referring to strategic imagination. Eyesight has no figurative dimension; vision has both. In medical contexts, both are used, but vision is the preferred term in clinical settings.

Speaker A: What is a common mistake about vision in business contexts?

Speaker B: Confusing vision with mission or strategy. The mission is what you do — your purpose in the present. The vision is where you are going — the desired future state. The strategy is how you plan to get there. Many organisations conflate vision and mission in documents that end up being neither — too action-oriented to be a true vision of the future, too vague to be a useful mission. A clear test: a vision statement should describe a future state that does not yet exist but that the organisation is working toward, and it should be vivid enough that people can see what it would look like when achieved.

Speaker A: Any close synonyms?

Speaker B: In the physical sense: sight, eyesight, and visual perception are the closest. In the imaginative sense: imagination, foresight, and insight are close. Dream is close for a desired future state but softer and less strategic. Aspiration is close for the organisational sense. Perspective and outlook describe how one sees the world. Conception and idea are close for a mental image. Prophecy and revelation are close for the mystical or religious sense. Vision is distinctive in spanning all these registers — it is the noun that connects physical sight, mental imagery, and strategic foresight in a single word.

Podcast 3 — Prompt engineering

Speaker B: Welcome to the workshop. Today we prompt AI using the word vision — building the strategic vision management platforms, product roadmap and goal-setting tools, computer vision and image analysis systems, user experience vision frameworks, and organisational direction management apps that define, communicate, and track where teams, products, and companies are heading.

Speaker A: So vision tells the AI to build the strategic direction and computer vision systems — the product vision and roadmap tools that capture and communicate where a product is heading over the next three years, the computer vision APIs that analyse images and video streams, and the OKR and goal management systems that connect daily work to the long-term organisational vision?

Speaker B: Exactly. It signals strategic direction, long-term goal management, and image analysis. Let me start with a product vision and strategic roadmap management system.

Build a product vision and strategic roadmap management system: capture a multi-year product vision with a desired future state description, the key problems being solved, the target users, and the success metrics. Break the vision into annual and quarterly themes. Link feature requests and roadmap items to the themes that advance the vision. Track which items are in progress and which are complete. Generate a progress report showing how much of the vision has been realised versus how much remains. Allow the vision to be updated as understanding evolves.

Speaker B: Vision management system captures multi-year desired state with problems-users-success metrics, breaks into annual-quarterly themes, links roadmap items to vision themes, tracks in-progress-complete items, generates realised-versus-remaining progress reports, and supports vision updates — the AI builds the vision capturer, the theme breaker, the roadmap linker, the tracker, the reporter, and the update handler.

Speaker A: Linking roadmap items to the vision themes they advance — creating explicit connections between individual deliverables and the parts of the vision they contribute to — is the strategic alignment mechanism: without links, roadmaps are lists of features with no clear relationship to the vision; with links, every item is justified by its contribution to the desired future state, and gaps — vision dimensions with no linked items — become immediately visible.

Speaker B: Roadmap-to-vision-theme linking as the unlinked-feature-list to strategic-alignment vision-gap visibility mechanism. Now the vision tracking schema.

Design a strategic vision and goal alignment schema: a vision_statements table recording each organisation's or product's vision with an ID, the vision text, the target year, the owner, and the creation and last-updated timestamps. A vision_themes table recording the strategic themes that constitute the vision with a theme ID, the vision ID, the theme name, the desired outcome, and the priority. A vision_evidence_items table recording each piece of evidence that the vision is being realised with the theme ID, the item type as metric, milestone, or feature, the item description, the measured or completed value, and the timestamp. A vision_progress_view computing per-theme the count of evidence items, the proportion of the theme's desired outcomes with evidence, and a progress classification as not-started, in-progress, or achieved.

Speaker B: Vision schema stores vision statements with target years and ownership, strategic themes with desired outcomes and priorities, evidence items with type-description-value, and a progress view with evidence counts, outcome coverage proportions, and not-started-in-progress-achieved classifications — the AI builds the four-table schema.

Speaker A: Recording evidence items that the vision is being realised — not just planned milestones but actual metrics, completed features, and measured outcomes — is the vision reality-check mechanism: a vision without evidence is aspiration; one where evidence items are accumulating against each theme is being actively pursued and realised; the evidence record distinguishes a living vision from a forgotten document.

Speaker B: Evidence-item accumulation as the forgotten-document versus actively-pursued-and-realised living vision reality-check distinction mechanism. Next, the vision communication interface.

Design a strategic vision communication and team alignment interface for a leadership team: show the organisation's vision statement prominently at the top. Display each strategic theme as a card showing the desired outcome, current progress, and the key evidence of progress to date. Show a vision realisation progress bar for the overall vision. Allow leaders to post vision updates — short notes explaining how recent decisions or outcomes connect to the vision. Display a team alignment indicator showing what proportion of team members have confirmed they understand the current vision.

Speaker B: Vision communication interface shows the vision statement prominently, theme cards with desired outcomes-progress-evidence, overall realisation progress bar, leader vision update posts, and team alignment proportion indicator — the AI builds the vision display, the theme cards, the progress bar, the update post system, and the alignment indicator.

Speaker A: The team alignment indicator showing what proportion of team members have confirmed they understand the current vision — tracking acknowledgement of the vision, not just its publication — is the communication effectiveness mechanism: a vision that has been published but not understood has not been communicated; the alignment indicator tracks whether the publication has converted into understanding, and a low figure prompts leadership to invest in more active communication.

Speaker B: Published-versus-understood alignment indicator as the communication effectiveness vision-publication-to-understanding conversion tracker. On to computer vision.

Create a computer vision image analysis and classification API: accept uploaded images and analyse them using a pre-trained model. Return detected objects with their confidence scores, bounding box coordinates, and labels. Classify the overall image into a category. Detect faces if present and return their locations without identifying individuals. Extract text present in the image using optical character recognition. Support batch processing of multiple images. Return all results as structured JSON. Include content safety classification flagging unsafe image content.

Speaker B: Computer vision API accepts image uploads, returns detected objects with confidence-bounds-labels, classifies images into categories, detects non-identifying face locations, extracts text via OCR, supports batch processing, returns structured JSON, and includes content safety classification — the AI builds the object detector, the image classifier, the face locator, the OCR extractor, the batch handler, and the safety classifier.

Speaker A: Detecting faces and returning their locations without identifying individuals — providing spatial awareness of face presence without facial recognition — is the privacy-preserving computer vision mechanism: knowing that faces are present in an image is useful for layout, moderation, and cropping decisions; identifying whose faces they are raises significant privacy concerns; the separation between detection and identification allows useful spatial data without the privacy risks of identification.

Speaker B: Non-identifying face location as the spatial-awareness-without-identification privacy-preserving computer vision mechanism. Now something whole.

Build an organisational vision and strategy management platform: manage vision statements, strategic themes, annual OKRs, and quarterly key results for an entire organisation. Allow department teams to create aligned sub-visions that support the organisational vision. Track progress at every level — organisational, departmental, and team. Generate quarterly strategy reviews showing progress against vision themes. Identify departments whose progress is misaligned with the organisational vision. Provide a leadership dashboard showing the overall health of vision execution.

Speaker B: Vision strategy platform manages organisational-departmental-team visions with OKR alignment, tracks progress at all three levels, generates quarterly strategy reviews, identifies misaligned departments, and provides leadership execution health dashboards — the AI builds the full organisational vision and strategy management platform.

Speaker A: Identifying departments whose progress is misaligned with the organisational vision — flagging cases where a department is making progress on its local goals but not advancing the shared vision — is the coherence management mechanism: individual department success that does not contribute to the shared vision represents activity without strategic value; the misalignment flag creates a conversation about whether the department's direction needs to shift or whether the vision needs to be updated.

Speaker B: Department misalignment flagging as the local-success without-strategic-value vision coherence management conversation trigger. Last one — vision API.

Write a strategic vision and OKR management REST API: provide endpoints for creating and updating vision statements, creating strategic themes linked to visions, adding OKRs linked to themes, recording key result progress updates, and querying the current progress of any vision with all its themes and linked OKRs. Return a vision health score for each vision based on the proportion of key results with recent progress updates. Support filtering themes and OKRs by status and date range.

Speaker B: Vision OKR API provides vision-CRUD, theme creation with vision linking, OKR creation with theme linking, key result progress recording, current-progress queries with themes-and-OKRs, vision health scores from recent-update proportions, and status-and-date filtering — the AI builds the full strategic vision and OKR management REST API.

Speaker A: Computing the vision health score from the proportion of key results with recent progress updates — penalising key results that have not been updated recently — is the active-management versus paper-vision distinction: a vision whose key results have not been updated in six weeks has been set and forgotten; one with regular progress updates is being actively managed; the recency component of the health score makes sustained attention the quality being measured.

Speaker B: That is the goal — one sight word, better-designed strategic vision management and computer vision systems. Keep it in your kit.
